I would like to share with you one of the group activities that most of the groups are working on during Daily 5 time. The majority of the class is working on reading a Literature Circle Novel. Right now the students are reading No Talking, Lost and Found, or Sideways Stories from Wayside School. Each day the students come to group having read the assigned reading chapters. (These chapters have been assigned the day before, and can be read during class or at home for their nightly reading minutes.) The students then spend about 15 minutes discussing their reading. Each child has a job that they are responsible for completing and bringing to group. This job helps them understand what they are reading and helps them be prepared to participate in the group discussion. These jobs also help us build mastery of third grade standards. For example, one job is the "Discussion Director" they are in charge of writing three questions to lead a discussion in the group. A question could be related to specific details in the story, but they can also be more open ended. For example, What do we learn about "Ray's" personality from this chapter? Another job is the Summarizer, this is a hard job for the students in general. They are to retell the main points including from the chapters read that night. Additional jobs include Word Finder, Passage Picker, Artful Artist, and Connector. The students will be rotating through all of these jobs. As they bring their books home you may have seen a paper with their assigned job, it will give you instructions on some things that they can include in their discussion. Please let me know if you have any questions, and know that the time they spend reading their literature circle book can count as their reading minutes, however if they prefer to read their chapters at school that is fine too.
